98 Dollar Laptop from China running Linux

$98 laptop from China - Industry changer?

On Techvideoblog is a story of the new HiVision mininote laptop, a MIPS based machine with WiFi, USB, Ethernet, SDHC, plus a fairly complete Linux install, for $98. No word on when it will be available.

This could be a real kick in the $BODYPART for the laptop industry - many people have said that once thing cross the $99 barrier and become blister-packed on a peg in the store, that the way people approach them will be changed. If HiVision can churn these out in quantity (and I have no reason to believe they cannot), you might even see them in vending machines in airports - leave your laptop at home, get one once through all the TSA BS.

There is simply NO WAY that a Windows machine could hit this price point without subsidies from Microsoft - you couldn't use a cheap non-x86 CPU, you would need more memory and storage, and the performance would still be unacceptably low.

Semi-OT: At work, I've been playing with the Beagleboard - a $150 developer board for the TI OMAP3 processor. 600MHz ARM core with a 500MHz DSP, 256M Flash, 128M RAM, simultaneous and independent S-Video and DVI outputs (DVI up to 2Kx2K), OpenGL acceleration (though, unfortunately, only through a non-Free driver), MPEG acceleration (again, only via a non-Free driver), and other goodness, at 2 watts power consumption. Already well supported by GNU and Linux, so that I won't have to waste my time screwing around just getting the thing to boot, and can spend my time doing the things that Aeroflex needs done.

These sorts of cheap and powerful systems are really changing both the face of consumer computing AND the face of embedded, and I'd like to thank all the people involved with Free Software (starting with RMS and working downward) for their contributions to the greater good of the world

    WOW!

I could hardly .... no, no, scratch that! I didn't understand a word you said right after $98.00

This is coming from a guy that leaves his computer on because I have a hard time finding the on/off switch.

At $98 bucks who cares? Well, I do. Seriously, if all you need a PC for is email, checking on your banking account and pestering BersaTalk forum members, this is not bad.

And with a Linux OS, no need to worry about all that crap that plagues Win.

Agreed on all fronts. I will be looking for these in the next few months.

I need a good laptop to use in my work truck. And for 98.00 I think I could take a chance on buying one to see how it works out.

Not a bad deal for the price.I`m sure there will be a good number of these sold once they hit the market since they will make owning a laptop more of a reality for a larger portion of people who otherwise couldn`t afford one at traditional prices.

These small sub-notebooks hit the market with the advent of ASUS's EEE. A sub-notebook under $400.00. It too came with a Linux OS. It sold like hot cakes. Since then, every other maker has jumped into the fray.

People want something small, well made and inexpensive. Something more than a smart cell or  PDA but not as costly as a full blown laptop.

This machine and others like it fit the bill. This is the future boys. Get with it.

Re: 98 Dollar Laptop from China running Linux

Yup. This is the future. Even if the $98 laptop is too thin for you and you still need the more expensive ones, this laptop on the market will drag their prices down. BTW in other countries Linux is creepin in more and more reducing laptop prices just because
it doesn't come with the Microsoft price tag.

Do you throw them away after the battery charge runs down?  Kinda like a bic lighter--you can't (safely/easily) refill them.  And what color lead paint will they come in?

    Probably just RED.
