    Recommended items for your kits

There are a ton of great stuff hitting the survival scene now-a-days and Adventure Medical has come out with some excellent packaged kits that slip into your pocket and weight practically nothing.  Their stuff can be bought at several online sources and I purchased mine at our local REI.

First of the items that I bought is a Pocket Survival Pak.  The kit was designed by Doug Ritter of Equipped.com and contains pretty much everything you will need to put up a shelter, start a fire, sew up your pants leg and get you rescued.  Here's a list of the gear that comes with the kit.

    • 1..... Signal Mirror, Rescue Flash™
    • 1..... Spark-Lite™ Fire Starter
    • 4..... Tinder Quick™ Firestarter
    • 1..... Whistle, Rescue Howler™
    • 1..... Waterproof Survival Instructions
    • 1..... Duct Tape, 2" x 26"
    • 1..... Scalpel with Handle, Sterile, Disposable, #22 Blade
    • 1..... Compass, Button, Liquid Filled
    • 1..... Aluminum Foil, Heavy Duty, 3 Sq. Ft.
    • 1..... Waterproof Paper
    • 1..... Fresnel Magnifier
    • 6..... Safety Wire, Stainless Steel, (6 ft of 0.020")
    • 1..... Sewing Thread, Bobbin #69, Nylon
    • 10.... Nylon Cord, #18, Braided, (10 ft. 100lb test)
    • 1..... Sewing Needle, #18, Chenille
    • 4..... Fish Hook, #10
    • 2..... Split Shot, Lead B
    • 1..... Snap Swivel, Size 12
    • 1..... Pencil
    • 1..... Pocket Survival Pak Contents List
    • 4..... Safety Pins

I also purchased one of the Pocket Medics and a Heat sheet that is supposed to be better than the space blankets that everyone should recongize.  The Heat sheet has instructions on the actual product on how to use it for shelter.  The Pocket Medic is a basic FAK that fits into a waterproof pack similar to the Pocket survival pak's.  I personalized both of the small waterproof kits by adding water purification tablets, additional moleskin and some 12# spyderwire line.

List of the items that come with the Pocket Medic:

    Medication
    • 2..... Motrin® (Ibuprofen 200 mg), Pkg./2
    • 1..... After Bite® Sting and Itch Relief Wipe
    Essentials
    • 1..... Splinter Picker/Tick Remover Forceps
    • 2..... Safety Pins
    Wound Care
    • 2..... Bandage, Butterfly Closure
    • 3..... After Cuts & Scrapes® Wipe
    • 1..... Triple Antibiotic Ointment, 1/32 oz
    • 1..... Moleskin, 3" x 4"
    Bandage Materials
    • 1..... Dressing, Gauze, Sterile, 2" x 2", Pkg./2
    • 4..... Bandage, Adhesive, Fabric, 1" x 3"
    • 2..... Bandage, Adhesive, Fabric, Knuckle

If you aren't familiar with these items, check them out online or hit your local REI.  You can probably put together your own kits, as I did for many years, but these are just too convenient and the items that are included are top notch gear.

Re: Recommended items for your kits

I recommended the AMK heatsheet, as part of a well rounded survival kit.  Here is a review that is posted on another site.  Hope that it is OK to post a link to the review.  It is five pages deep, so if you are interested, scroll through them and get all the info that was shared in the 37 days that it was used as a shelter.
