Cabelas Speer Gold Dot? Deal or Dumb

Looking to stock up on some good ammo and saw this stuff at Cabela's.  I was just about to buy because of the shiping sale when I saw the disclaimer "For practice use only", "Although functional, these rounds do not meet preformance requirements".  What does this mean, are they low velocity or just plain tempermental.  I don't want junk rounds, junk kills, and I don't mean the other guy.  I did the math and it ends up $37-40 per 100 rounds, just double the winchester white box at wally world (NC), not bad, if it's good.  If this stuff is junk where can you get the good stuff bulk, or can you?

Well, I don't know for sure, but I'd say from the disclaimer that you'd be well advised to not consider that bulk ammo a good candidate for carry or actual self-defense.  Hmm [^o)]  Because you said it. Junk kills.

Re: Cabelas Speer Gold Dot? Deal or Dumb

I agree.  Disclaimers bother me, so I don't go near them.  I picked up some Georgia Arms .380acp with Gold Dot bullets for about $37.00 for 100 rounds (new ammo).  They rated it at 950fps (on package not site) and they ship bulk packaging.  Shipping to the left coast brought each round to about .53, but is less on east coast.  They use the same brass as Buffalo Bore and just looking at the two rounds, there is absolutely no visual difference between them.  I havn't shot any of them through the Bersa yet though, but am expecting them to feed just like the Buffalo Bore HP rounds, which feed perfectly.

Thanks alot MikLaw,  Impressive site!  Do you have any experience with any of there 9mm ammo (anybody).  Man these ammo prices are a killer, I wish I were in on things when it was a bit cheaper.  The way I figure it it's probably about as likely for ammo prices to go down as gas, thats why I'm going for a buy up of what I can afford now because we may not be able to afford it later.

Go to www.ammunitiontogo.com or midwayusa.com. They both have good ammo prices.

I much prefer the Corbon JHP, but at 17.00-19.00 + shipping for 20 rounds, I had to look for alternatives.  Our budget just can't handle bulk purchases when prices are a buck or more a round.

Just as a test, I shot 20 rounds of Magtech Guardian Gold through both my BT380 and 45UC. First time I've shot JHP +P in either gun and had no problems. Nice sub 3-inch groups at the 7-yd line too.

The few tests that I seen the Magtech stuff included in, there was little to no expansion with the .380 HP round.  The wife got a box of the magtech HPs and they remain in the ammo locker.  Probably use them for target out at the range.  OTOH, their ball ammo is cheap and seems to shoot well.

georgiaarms.com is a good source. Good reloads with factory quality.

I ordered 100 rounds from them and it is NEW ammo.  They only reload their own brass, which I will have them do when I've got a few hundred set aside.

Re: Cabelas Speer Gold Dot? Deal or Dumb

I would say they are likely as good or better than the WWB hollow points from Wal-Mart.  They probably have to put the disclaimer to prevent misrepresentation of product.  I would bet the WWB don't meet LEO standards either.  At the price offered you could practice and carry the same ammo affordably.

    Just my .02

I'm thinking about gettting some but I hate paying shipping charges.

Do you think that you would trust it for carry, that was what I was wondering?  I would guess that it would be a weaker round.  It has the same bullet but I'm guessing a smaller charge for target shooting.  I have used the WWB FMJ and I can't find an fps rating anywhere on the box and I don't remember seeing one at Cabela's.

I bought the Georgia Arms +P 124gr HP, now I can't say that I noticed a difference when I compared them round by round when I shot them(WWB).  I can only assume that the bullet was going faster (1200fps advertised GA).  About the same price so that's something to chew over if your thinking about Cabela's.

After looking around, I found that I can get Federal Premium HST Tacticals for the same price, even cheaper when figuring in shipping.

    Here http://ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/product_info.php?pName=50rds-9mm-federal-le-tactical-hst-124gr-hp-ammo and on Gunbroker

Much better round and highly recommended.
