    Opposite hand shooting

Mainly for combat veterans or LEO, but anyone can chime in.

Should I spend time and ammo learning to shoot with my off hand? I've read a lot on the boards about most SD encounters being very close and very short. But in the event that your dominant hand/arm is incapacitated and you still have an opportunity to defend, should you be prepared to shoot with your off hand? Or is my time/ammo better spent at perfecting my dominant hand?

Yes. Practice off-handed. Pop a few w/o ear protection, and always practice drawing and getting into a defensive position.

I now shoot probably 40% of the time with my off hand. I think it is invaluable.

    Re: Opposite hand shooting

Yes  I say 25% weak one hand . 25% strong hand . One handed   25%strong hand point shooting start at 10' .  Rest 2 handed hold. Most will disagree with me but  I just think might not always be able to get 2 hands and bring up to a sight picture . Close up 7yds and less  will be very likely a 1 hand deal.    Of course I still belive their a handgun  not handsgun. But Iam old and out of touch just ask my family.

I also belive you need to find a place where you can shoot from draw  rapid fire and move.  Can't do this at ranges  Safety. So go play games or find place in country.

    Re: Opposite hand shooting

It's important to me. I practice with my off hand every range trip. I carry in a cross-draw rig because I'm on the road every day. On the off chance I need to draw left handed, I think it's necessary. It's a bit trickier drawing, and it would be a shame to miss after all that effort.

I practice weak hand shooting every range visit. Unfortunately, I can't practice this...

I also belive you need to find a place where you can shoot from draw  rapid fire and move.  Can't do this at ranges  Safety.

I actually have snap caps (came with another gun) and have worked on my draw. It's the rapid live fire and movement that I need to practice.

I'm working on getting permission from a woman I know to use her property out in the boonies to practice the above. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
