Great dialogue....

I too would take cover and draw my sidearm.
Obviously if the clerk is being shot at or is at gun point the situation has become volitile.

This BG is not stupid I assume he knows I am there. Cover and move to not be a victim as well.

- call 911 for back up on my cell.
(Given he has stated he does not want to harm the clerk)
- I give clear directives to drop the gun and lay on the floor.
(if this does not work, attempt to defuse the BG while behind cover)
-By this time L/E has arrived and I can begin to back out, if possible.

Then, (exhale)
- go home (after debrief)
- change underwear
- drink beers

I would have no interest in stopping a robbery.

My test is simply this: If I am convinced that the robber is about to shoot the clerk or someone else, I drop him with no warning.

Even if he shoots the clerk before I have time to react and he is running away without endangering anyone else, I wouldn't shoot, or even shout at him to stop.......I'd simply get as much info (description, license plates, etc) as possible.

My weapon only comes out if someone is in imminent danger and I believe that I can stop the attack.

First, I don't want to make a bad situation worse. If I think it will end with no bloodshed, then it can end that way... Buuutttt, I don't think I'd want to look in the mirror everymorning knowing I didn't lift a finger to do something if I could have helped someone who was in eminent danger.. Especially an innocent someone.
